Trunk Island Project

November 17, 2025

SRS Bermuda helped with the Trunk Island Project, known as a “living classroom”, in association with the Bermuda Zoological Society and the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo.  (Registered Bermuda charity.)

Trunk Island, the largest island in Harrington Sound, spans seven acres and is an ecological treasure with diverse habitats. The Bermuda Zoological Society has focused on its conservation and education efforts since 2006. Harrington Sound, often mistaken for a lake, is an inland body of water fed by the ocean through Flatt’s inlet and underwater caves. Trunk Island’s geography has evolved over millennia from a cedar-forested hill to its current form due to rising sea levels. Historically, the island was used for tobacco farming, which led to significant habitat destruction, but restoration efforts have been ongoing since the 17th century. Today, Trunk Island serves as a center for learning about Bermuda’s ecosystems, with initiatives like mangrove and micro forest planting to support native plant life and combat global warming.

Being involved in this project was really rewarding. We got to learn about all aspects of the Trunk Island Project, the History, the Conservation, and the Living Classroom. Our task for the day was to clean and plant in the endemic Palmetto Forest. Our team felt very accomplished by the end of the day. The staff at BZS were very helpful and knowledgeable from the beginning to the end of our experience at Trunk Island, which made the day that much more enjoyable. We are looking forward to next year!
